The Harbour Garden

harbour gardenHere at WDC we are continuously overwhelmed by the generosity shown by those people who choose to support our work in memory of a loved one, or by leaving a gift to WDC in their Will.

To acknowledge this special and tremendous support we have created a space at our Scottish Dolphin Centre where friends and family can gather together in peaceful, tranquil surroundings to share memories of someone dear to them, whilst surrounded by the natural beauty of Spey Bay.

The Harbour Garden was given its name by our staff and volunteers not only for its marine connection but also for the word’s meanings; to keep and hold in mind and a place of shelter and refuge, which were felt to be extremely fitting given the garden’s purpose. Making use of the building’s existing structure, the walled garden encompasses raised planting beds featuring native sensory herbs, flowers and ferns.

At the heart of the Harbour Garden is a stunning whale tail sculpture, built using driftwood and featuring engravings of poetry about Spey Bay written by well known local poet, John Mackie. There’s a wildlife area featuring plants and shrubs deliberately chosen to attract butterflies and insects and a seating area which, as the garden grows and matures, will eventually be surrounded by colourful, beautifully scented climbers. And finally, we’ve also incorporated a vegetable plot which will be used by our Education Officer during school visits to encourage children to get involved in the planting and rotation of flowers and vegetables.

If you would like to remember your loved one through WDC’s Harbour Garden then we can arrange for a memorial pebble, inscribed with wording of your choice, to be placed within the garden. Each pebble is completely unique in shape, size and character and we will send you a photograph of your pebble once a site has been chosen for it.*

*If you would prefer to have the pebble at home in your own garden then we can of course do this for you.
