Project insight

OrcalabThe Adopt a Whale Programme provides us with an amazing insight into the mysterious lives of the mighty but gentle orcas (killer whales) of British Columbia. After years of studying these majestic whales, researchers are able to recognise individuals from their unique markings found on their dorsal fins. Each whale has now been assigned an individual number and name to reflect its heritage or personality.

WDCS funds the work of researchers, Paul Spong and Helena Symonds, based at the Orcalab research station on Hanson Island, in the waters of the "Inside Passage" of northern Vancouver Island where the orcas spend the summer months. The orcas belong to a family known as the "northern resident community" of British Columbia orcas. These fascinating animals have also been the subject of several books, documentary and feature films. You can find out more about Paul and Helena's work on their website at http://www.orcalab.org
