Day two in the Lossiemouth WDCS caravan….

Another 4 a.m. start for the survey team.

We head out of the harbour with a beautiful sunrise, making the early start worthwhile. We’re hardly on transect before we spot our first minke of the day. Today we have press on board to interview WDCS about the outer Moray Firth survey and although we don’t have any close encounters to film we see a number of minkes and porpoises as the morning progresses. Unfortunately the wind picks up towards midday and we head back after 8 hours for a well earned afternoon off.

Day three…

There’s still too much wind to go out on survey today so we head to the Spey Bay wildlife centre instead. After two very informative talks from Laura and Mark, bringing us up to date on captivity and whaling campaigns, we have a day of entering bird data and watching the local wildlife.

The ospreys are out fishing again, as well as a few locals, and although the otters are elusive as ever I do spot a seal bobbing about in the river mouth. Tomorrow the weather looks more promising so fingers crossed we’ll get another day of surveying.
