A great start to the working week!
Monday 11th May
Sunday rolled into Monday and we held our breath for good weather. We were lucky - today was another good watching day. A steady flow of tankers and fishing vessels worked their way through the Minch. Occasionally Orca (no, not the whale species unfortunately!), a local marine wildlife watching vessel, also appeared. We had a steady flow of sightings of the two most commonly seen species at this time of year - minke whales and a harbour porpoise. The wind stayed low and as we scanned across the water looking for splashes and gleaming fins, we ogled at the gorgeous colours, shapes and shadows of the islands that our study site overlooks, on the other side of the Minch. Our honeymooning friends, Cathy and Pete, identified one particular triangular mountain for us - the Isle of Scalpay - which looks like an Egyptian pyramid from this side and it stands out amongst the raggedy island mountain peaks and fins of Skye, Raasay, Rona and the outer Isles.
A beautiful lingering orange sunset over the Isle of Lewis ended a long and rewarding day.
