Hello. I’m Sarah, a volunteer on the summer survey and here’s how I spent my Sunday:
Well it was an early start for a Sunday. We crawled out of bed rather reluctantly at 4.30 a.m. but after a delicious bowl of porridge, courtesy of Lucy, and feeling considerably more awake, we set off out of Buckie harbour for a day of surveying in the outer
My first shift was on acoustics, and after a few teething problems with the hydrophone and some training, I settled down to listen out for dolphin whistles and clicks as we set out on transect through the
From acoustics I moved to bird observing and joined the others outside braving the rain and the spray from the bow to watch for diving gannets, shearwaters gliding the waves, or the occasional auk.
As the day progressed the weather improved and the sea calmed, making our observations considerably easier, and we enjoyed sightings of around 20 common dolphins, a number of harbour porpoises and even a minke whale. So, despite a wet start, and a few bouts of sea sickness on my part, we’ve had a successful day as I join WDCS in the second week of their August surveys in the outer
