Who is really chairing the meeting of the IWC this year?
The EU have been debating their voting process for months now, and one concern is that the Chairman may, like the Chair in the recent CITES meeting, prevent them from being able to coordinate to counter the pro-whaling countries (not forgetting that Sweden and Denmark are pro-commercial whaling of course), but they must now be wondering what the Chairman for this meeting, Anthony Liverpool of Antigua, will be thinking and allowing them to do if they are not agreeing with the whalers?
Today's (20th June Sunday Times) reports that the IWC Vice-Chairman, Anthony Liverpool of Antigua, was having his costs for this meeting covered by Japan.
In a larger piece the paper reports ‘ When he [Liverpool] checking into
the Atlas Amadil Beach hotel in Agadir last Sunday somebody had already
paid his bill of about £4,000 by credit card. Investigations by this newspaper have established that the name on the
card was “Japan Tours and Travel Inc”. The firm is linked to a Japanese business man called Hideuki “Harry” Wakasa, and the paper claims he is a known agent for the Japanese Fisheries Agencies.
Its definatelly worth a read if you can get hold of the article.
