Iceland slaps the IWC in the face

Author - CEO

Reports out of Iceland today indicate that the Icelandic industrial whaler Hvalur 9 left port just after midnight this morning. Icelandic news reports that the whalers have stated that they are going to finish the hunting of 150 fin whales in September. Their initial intent appears to be that they are setting out to  hunt 2 fin whales because they need to test the equipment in the whaling station in Hvalfjordur.  They also say that Hvalur 8, the other boat they are going to use is not ready yet, and that is the reason that they will not be able to finish the hunting until September.

What does this mean for the IWC? Well it's a calculated insult of course. Its also a provocation, that is being led by the owner of the vessels and maybe not even the Icelandic Government. Its an attempt to say, 'it does not matter what the IWC says, we shall do what we like'. Maybe they are trying to encourage Greenland to do the same?

Again countries in the 21st Century have to decide whether they want to be part of the global community or whether they wish to go back to the days of unilateral ocean piracy.
